Akai MPC-2000
Here's the spec's..... never used one, I've listed the MPC's as sequencers, as to me that is their primary function, with a sampling drum & loop box attatched.... The Mpc's are not samplers in the sense that you can create a sound, map int over the keybaord range, and play it or sequence it melodicaly..... think of them as excellent hardware sequncers with an un-limited drum kit library, and loop player.... sure, by arranging samples of pitches, you can create melodic lines, but it's not like a synth-sampler.... read on.......

I bought the mpc2000 a year back. the pads rock, the sequencer is fairly straightforward and intuitive, and the box is bulletproof. on the OTHER hand, akai's technical support blows chunks, their OS updates are priority zero evidently, and the actual OS's themselves forget really obvious stuff that every other box can do. I figure enough MPC owners out there bitching might cause Akai to reconsider the OS...Not quite a real sampler either: BUT you can do a fuck of a lot with just this box, so buy it with both eyes open and get a SCSI drive asap!

I've owned mine for about a year and I've found it to be very versatile. Sometimes the sequencing can be annoying especially when you're fixing something, and the sound plays after you deleted it. Otherwise, no complaints!!

Actually, you CAN map shit chromatically
or you can take 1 sample and play it at different pitches without remapping it and using up memory.

Yes, you can take one sample and use the "16 levels" button to automatically make that sample play your choice of 16 types of pitch, volume, filter and attack. So, some synth line stuff is very possible with one shot synth samples. Just make sure you sample the synth tone long enough, because remember as the pitch increases the sample gets shorter. I've had my MPC for one month and have gotten more done on it than I have owning the ASR X for a year. It blows it out of the water, absolutley necessary for live D+B, hip hop etc. In my opinion it does all the sampling functions you need, its way mor than jsut a HW sequencer. Getting loops with the graphical waveform display is very easy and seamless. Much more difficult on the ASR X. Very cool box and I've noticed they keep very good resale value. (not that I'll be selling anytime soon)

The MPC2000XL which has been out since late '99 is what I sequence all my drums on for live jungle . This piece is a must for anyone considering doing a live breakbeat project, among other drum-sample based dance genres (prolly great for industrial too). editing features kikass in the studio, and when I'm out playin, I don't have to worry about it crashing, or buttons going funny because it's a tried and true unit. Rock frickin solid baybee.
