Akai S01

1992.... and in came the first 3000 series with a basic structure of 32mb standard expanded, 8 poly outs & stereo in/out... there were various guises....

The budget S01 - 8 note poly mono-timbrel unit was one of the released series, coming out before the CD3000 ...

. This was a cheap sampler Akai released designed to get people a genuine Akai sampler - but with VERY limited features....It had only a 2mb max memory, 8 note poly, only 8 samples max in memory, and is mono-timbrel... I think they released this so that studio's with a multi-track could get access to Akai's sample library, and use it to play stuff down onto tape for mapped sounds, phrase sampling, or/and as a drum sample module.... so for a drum box & phrase sampler, these units are ok... except no multi-outs.... in fact... I thought these were mono output only ??....

hi-fidelity sounds (fixed 16bit, 32khz samplerate, mono = may not seem like a winner but its definitely ok). upto 15,6sec of sampling time with 1 mb memory which is plenty for a small drumkit (only 8 spots for 8 samples anyway). editing is supereasy. this machine has about the best interface i've ever seen in a hardware sampler. only real letdown is the mono-output (no expansions either!). it also lacks scsi, filters, eq, built-in effects etc etc. but it does have 2 midi-ins, can map your samples over a keyboard (wohoo!), is built like a Volvo and IS 8-PART MULTITIMBRAL (meaning the 8 different sounds can sound at the SAME time - with 1 polyphony each in this case). worth 100$ imo. if only it had had multiple outs, it would have been the ultimate budget studiosampler. i still love it for its ease of use. not a single redundant option. gotta love something this pure.

and if i ever feel like editing my samples thoroughly IN a machine, i'll get me a Kurzweil. as it is, editing the sounds outside and then putting them back is really ok for the money.

I've had mine for over a year now and it's great. I bought it second-hand in great condition and have developed a fairly big library for it. It's able to import WAV,
AIFF and AVR samples directly over MIDI which is handy when pulling down interesting samples from the net.

Yes, it can only sample in mono and the output is mono (well there is another out jack too but neither are dedicated left/right outs) but it's able to do the business.
The actual manipulation side is a bit basic but that suits me just fine! The sampling quality and time are not controllable but it sounds just fine. I sample a
lot of drums on it and it replays them with a minimum of its own colouration. I
also own a vintage Ensoniq Mirage rack sampler which is incredibly gritty and
really chews the inputed sounds!

Cheers and if you see one for less than £100, buy it.

I've had one of these for a few years now and it does what it says on the tin really. There's one sampling rate - 44.1khz - which is plenty clear enough for most mixes and around 17 secs sampling time.

I've used it for sampling brief backing vocal phrases and drum sounds mostly. I'd say it was pretty good at the latter and its 8 sample locations enable you to record bass, snare, hi-hat, claps etc into the memory so it could be a virtual drum machine! That said, its single back panel (mono) output limits it a bit in this regard. It can be fed by two MIDI Ins (you can switch between them) so it's possible to load in a sample over MIDI and then audition it on the sampler's buttons or via a master keyboard to get an idea of it sounds at different octaves.

As long as you keep what you want to short sampling times, the S01 should give you what you want.
