M-audio Delta Audiophile 2496Many users are looking for a good solid robust no-nonsense stereo only i/o soundcard, specificaly for use with the main sequencer s/w's such as VST, Logic-Audio, Sonar & Cakewalk, Reason or Orion etc.. well, amongst the many around you can't do much better than the Midiman Audiophile soundcard... Straigh no-nonsense stuff with an excellent sound!!
The Midiman Audiophile 2496 is based on the Delta series chip/drivers, as is listed and handled by their M-AUDIO division as a consequence... The Audiophileworks up to 24bit 96khz for accross the board compatibility with the main desired sample-rates & bit rates. There are a few key reasons to check this card, or frankly .. get this card!!
- Sereo In/OUT on gold plated RCA-Phono connectors for a good solid connection to your amp/mixer etc
- ASIO2 for VST, EASI for Logic & also Gigsampler drivers ready & working!
S/pdif included ! - proper pro-quality real s/pdif for your DAT etc.
- Midi I/O included, so everything required is there & rock solid in sync with audio!
The card comes as a small pci length device with the four gold plated connectors on the actual card plate. There is a 'Joystick' style multipin connector also next to the phono's and this is used to attach a chrome/metal plugged cluster-cable from which 4 leads emerge. (mine has a metal/chrome plated connector despite the image above) - The four emerging leads are arranged as two pairs, one pair terminating in the S/PDIF In/OUT phono connector sockets, and the other pair terminating in the MIDI IN/OUT sockets!... It's as simple as that !!!
In practical use, the midiman Audiophile control applet & driver install etc set's up easy from the CD, and you can grab the latest drivers from Midiman's website too of course. when you reboot, you get this applet which acts as the command center for the driver settings, and routing /monitoring of the various i/o sources the card commands.
Here's the meter page of the applet - from left to right is the master main monitor out, the hardware out 1/2, s/pdif out 1/2, and meters for audio in - hardware IN 1/2 & s/pdif In 1/2 - pairs can be muted & solo'd etc.. the applet allows for up to 4 audio cards/pairs to be installed/selected using the far-right AP select.
This is the mixer settings page, where you what input/s & output/s are being routed to the available physical outs... There are 3 other analog setting columns greyed out which i presume is for when the delta applet is being used with an 8x8 IOIO rack device to create the settings for each of the Delta's possible 4 pairs of analog OUT's - As you can see it is versatile.. with the available hardware analog out's and S/PDIF out's being capable of being fed with a variety of sources...
Here's the hardware settings page... this set's stuff like the sample-rate, wether the master clock is inyternal or locked to the S/PDIF IN clock, dma & buffer sizes, S/PDIF sample-rate (if active), single or in-sync drivers etc etc...
Further to this there is an S/PDIF panel for setting consumer or professional S/PDIF options including options for SCMS & generation copying and emphasis...
But.. what most user's want to know is.... is it any good!!.. and the firm answer to that is YES!!.. it is VERY good... you'd have to say it is probably the best stereo audio card on the market offering excellent facilities and cross s/w platform compatibility you can get!
I own one, and it works excellently in Logic-Audio with it's EASI drivers and in VST5 with ASIO, it also performs well in Reason, Orion & even with Cakewalks new SONAR after spending further time adjusting buffers and getting it right, I can even play realtime DXi's and it works all day with no problems and dropouts!
The integrated MIDI connections means rock solid audio & midi sync on the same IRQ, and working in VST & Logic etc gives easy record and it's 'ready to play in sync' everytime...
The sound quality is crisp, clean, quiet & clear with excellent dynamic's... as good as you could possibly want from a simple stereo card and the connectors are robust for no-crackle connection to your equipment!!... The ONLY slight downside for me was a lack of Cd audio OUT connector so I couldn't play my audio CD's with the Window's CD-Player.exe... but you can play your CD's via a s/w player of course... but i suppose they left that out to ensure no possible earth problems and full control of the cards isolation perhaps?... it certainly is suuper-qiet.. and very well priced at less than 200 squids!!
So.. all in all, a TOP card, I'd recommend it without a moments hesitation!!... The Audiophile thrashes most of the competition if what you want is a no nonsense stereo I/O device that'll work flawlessly and efficiently with your music s/w, (and plays games ok, UT, Quake, Halflife etc etc) etc etc - Low latency at 44.1khz of 8ms for realtime VSTi & Logic Instrument etc playing... a total winner... Making audio I/O and related devices is what Midiman do, they've been doing it for along time, and they don't stray from their area of expertise... and hey!.. apparently now you even get a FREE bundled special 'Delta' copy of Logic-audio, with 16 audio tracks & midi, works with plugins etc just like Logic proper!!... and you get also other included free 'Maximum Audio Tools™' s/w package too!!.. I dunno if this applies to ALL territories, but from the German site:
Delta Audiophile 2496 ist ab sofort mit dem umfangreichen Software-Paket Maximum Audio Tools™ verfügbar.
Das Paket enthält u.A. Logic Delta von Emagic mit 24Bit/96kHz- und Plug-In-Support für Mac und PC sowie Nemesys Gigasampler LE und Sonic Foundry ACID Xpress.
also from another Midiman site page....
"Maximum Audio Tools™ liegt den Systemen Delta 1010, Delta 66 Omni Studio, Delta 44 Omni, Delta 66, Delta 44 und Delta Audiophile 2496 bei und beinhaltet folgende Programme für Windows 98/ME oder MacOS:
Wow!!.... but regardless of that superb offer I'd STILL give the Audiophile 2496 a firm 10/10 !!
