New price: .$149.00 ......£ 149 ish !!... bargain !!  |   S/H price: ??

m-audio DMAN

The 'DMAN' range are audio cards from Midiman and I decided to add all their cards to this one page so you can check out thier stuff, and get some feedback on the kit from any passing users who want to comment........

We've got five units in the audio card range, (Dman make loads of other kit from digital patchbays to midi boxes) and they are looking pretty good, although up against stiff competition from many other cards, some with samplers or synths also built in.......For example, from the Terratec & Pinnacle, Event card range etc in the higher 4 output price bracket......

MIDIMAN seem to have a fairly cool reputation tho for a quality bit of kit....... German engineering & design......and attention to detail.....I never used a Dman card, but never heard one slated or noticed any comments at newsgroups about problems as far as I can remember.......anyway, we'll see what any posted comments add to the picture.......

First up, we have a straight stereo in/out card confusingly called 'Dman - Digital Audio Card'...... confusing to me, cos I keep having to do a double take to make sure it's not a digital only card.... er........obviously, if it's a PC card, it's going to record a digital signal, so I tend to find other companies reserve this name for s/pdif cards....... could confuse punters that.....

Anyhow, it's an ISA card with stereo line-level in's/out's + auxilliary input which merges with the stereo in signal.....it's full-duplex....... has a high impedance mic input midi out with cable connector with in & out, included....... .......oh yeah.... It also takes any standard wavetable header synth daughterboard........

So.... how much ??.......it is pretty cheap at a recommended price of $250 - £, so probably cheaper in shops or mail order...... anyone got some prices elsewhere ??......

There is one other thing..... you can get the card with a copy of Samplitude for 300 bucks, or about 250 quid...... This is a pretty ok hard disk soft, and will sync quite happily to any sequencer......if you have a midi sequencer, but no decent hard-disk section, and also need a good soundcard, then this could be a good bet if you have a decent pc.......very good specs & build quality for a cheaper card......

Eh Justin, I've got a 2044 and an Awe64 in my Pentium

here in Los Angeles, and it works great, no conflicts

or anything -- I didn't bother checking the IRQs it

wanted since it worked great right outta' the box. You're certain you've checked-out the 2044 control panel applet? Make sure you've got the outs routed in such a way that you can hear 'em -- also, if your application doesn't send stuff to the "DMan xxx out" device, you won't hear anything unless you've got the "monitor" levels set (see the volume control app, advanced properties, monitors).

My only complaint is that I can't change the jumpers on the card only allow me to go down to -10db and it's just not loud enough (mebbe I'm thinking wrong?) and that despite having a 266mmx/96MB ram, an Awe64 and DMan2044, I *still* can't really record 1 stereo in while 1 or more audios are playing back IN CUBASE VST -- is it just me, or does it seem like this stuff doesn't really work the way it's supposed to? Why can't it just work like tape, but on a disk? 8-(

I think that the Dman stereo card is very good, the only thing I did not like, is that is does not have a means to connect it to your CD-ROM drive internally, you have to run a cable from the outside of the CD-ROM round to the back of the machine and plug it in there.

Looks a bit messy.

just a quick note to say that in fact the Terratec outputs a mirror of the sum-total analog out mix to the s/pdif.... you cant send say 2 channels to s/pdif & the other 4 to the 4 analog outs and get 6 discrete seperate outs..... so you cant actually get an extra pair of outs by using the Flying-Calf as I suggested..... whoops.... sorry.......

Some news from MIDIMAN (22/01/1998) regarding the DMAN 2044 -

"The units for sell through are being delivered to MIDIMAN next week. They say that shipments will leave them next so I expect our units to be first week Feb.

The effects are not currently implemented but this feature plus support for 2 cards (ie 8x8) will follow soon as this is purely a driver update and will be non chargeable."

There is no sample store as implied with the original advert as this increased the noise output.

YES YOU CAN..... digital s/pdif cards get recognised the same as an analog card.... so you use it the same as a standard card, but obviously, you only can connect to a digita device... I use a DAL digital only card D with cakewalk, cubase, forge, saw etc etc....

Yes, you can have x2 (?) 2044s installed with the new drivers available from the midiman site, however they are still in beta currently. The beta drivers enable the reverb and chorus effects from the onboard DSP chip. However, my card does not work at the moment, not sure whether it is the motherboard, or a faulty card. Support is very good in the UK though.

I recently put a fishman pickup in my acoustic guitar and really want to plug it into my pc. Would the d-man stereo card be the way to start? could it handle a mic at the same time?

I need suggestions for installing the dman 2044. Bassically it is installing itself to an IRQ that is already occupied by my video card. I've talked with midiman tech support about three times so far and they can't help me change this. Nothing we do changes these configuration settings. Unless someone can help I have to return this card. Help! thanks...

i cant figure out why the dman2044 isnt working. All the diagnostics say it is installed correctly but i'm still not gettting any audio from the the inputs or outputs. Could it be my motherboard? I also still have the soundblaster card hooked up. If anyone has any info or knows where i can get some it would help me out

...oh, what I meant to say was "the jumpers only allow input down to -10db" and it's still too damnable soft coming out of my JP8000 at full-blast -- am I like WAY confused here or something? I've gotta' be doing something wrong 'cause the JP8k nearly blows-up my monitors. 8-)

I too had many problems with my DMAN 2044...actually, it worked fine up until I upgraded my motherboard and chip. I used to have a P233 w/mmx, Tx motherboard, and I upgraded to an AMD k6-2 350 w/Aopen Ax59pro motherboard. After the upgrade, my recorded audio would go out of sync and clipping would occur on the right output after about 12 sec. I tried adding/removing just about everything on my pc, but no luck. I contacted MIDIMAN tech support, but they failed to solve my problem. My advice to you: don't bother removing the card (or upgrading your computer) for audio may never be the same!

Yes, I'm here; I finally joined the computer age...I've been recording for 4 or 5 years with a Tascam 424. I have a DELL PII233, 32RAM, 4.1 harddrive. I want to record on computer (guitar, drum machine, bass and vocals)...where do I start, what do I need...

P.S. Let's keep it under a grand if possible!

I'm new to all this stuff but a CakeWalk representative informed me the DMAN2044 is the recommended soundcard for use with the CakeWalk package. Take it with a grain of salt.

I've got the Dman 2044 and haven't gotten it to work right with my system yet. I'm running Cakewalk 6.0 Pro with Win98 on a fairly new AMD K62-300MHz with 6.4 gig and 64 Meg Ram. But the only time I can get a digital audio recording without pops and clicks is when I drop the sample rate way down to 11 Mhz. If you try it at 44 or 48Mhz or even 22Mhz, forget about it. And that's only recording on two tracks simulanteously. Supposedly my AMD K62-300 can hang pretty well with Pentiums so unless there is a serious inherrent problem recording audio with the AMD K62 Chip then the problem must lie with the card or drivers?? Any input or similar comments would be appreciated. PS Is there a way for me to dedicate more of my systems resources to recording to alleviate this problem??

THanks, DJ

Don't buy the Dman 2044 card on the basis that it is a 20-bit card because IT IS NOT!! Midiman tech support says that the 20 bit part didn't work as expected and that it is really just a high quality 16 bit card. I will send you a copy of the email from tech support if you would like.

Be careful with the AMD processors, guys !!!. I read they were much slower than the Intels for floating point calculations, which are extensively used for digital audio stuff. So u'd probably better spend the extra $$$ required to enjoy your VST/Logic....

I'm having some horrendous problems with my new DMAN 2044. I'm using Cakewalk, and I go into Cakewalk's Audio options/advanced window and tell Cakewalk that I want playback while I record.

When I go back to record, my computer will playback in record for about 1/2 second, and then it shuts down completely. The shutdown is accompanied by other problems: it stops playing back outside of record, it won't record without the playback option, and if I exit Cakewalk and get on the net, AOL goes inoperable.

Does anybody have a clue what I'm doing wrong?

I have had this card for a about 6 months now and I wish I never bought it. Not only have I upgraded my motherboard but spent much time in pissing around with new drivers, refresh modes with my graphics card, no throttle in ini files (advise from the technical support) in order to get the stupid card to work with no crackling. And the only thing to solve the crackling is some new drivers, in other words nothing wrong at all with my system and all a waste of time. Well, this still hasn't completely solved the crackling, sometimes it is OK, most of the time it is not. Now I am not sure whether it is just my system, but there seems to be another problem with the playback - if you listen to very quiet wavs, ie if the music is fading, then it seems to be distorted, you know in a way that an 8-bit file sounds crappy because of the sample resolution? This is with any wav file, not just ones recorded with the card. Anyway, my advise is to stay well clear of this card.

the dman2044 surely is a quality card at a very attractive price, but one SHOULD NOT BUY IT (at least pc users - i don't know anything about macs)! and that's only because midiman are remarkably stupid and won't deliver quality drivers for their quality card. the old crackling problem keeps haunting us (for some more user comments see below), and the german support just won't answer any of my email and snailmail requests. i'm concinced a directx driver would solve all problems, but i also think there'll never be one from THOSE people.

and the thing was the same with the (vaguely) promised dsp control software and the legendary software controlled "sampler" based on the dman dsp (which was a project also promised by midiman, but then nobody ever heard of it again). oh, and think of the nt 4 driver legend...

the problem is obvious: anyone can stick a couple of codecs and a dsp on a pcb and call it a sound board, but the thing that really matters in the pc hardware world these days is the driver and software availability and quality. midiman completely failed in delivering such drivers and software, and we'll categorically seek to avoid any contact with them in the future.

I'm a current dj looking to record my mixes from my turntables through my pc(hp pavillion)onto CD. Would this be the appropriate plug-in to use? Also would samplitude be the software to use when monitoring my mixes for sound quality.

Thanks,

I have the DMAN-PCI, not the 2044. It cost me £99.00. I got it as it has Direct-X drivers and my SW1000XG doesn't. I'm happy with the card. The drivers are good and the latency with softsynths etc is very low, typically I can set most of these apps to as low a latency as they allow and it works with no problems. The sound quality is good but not as good as the SW1000XG. It's a hell of a lot better than my old AWE64 card.

I think that it's a great buy for softsynth use.

Salut,

I have had a new DMAN PCI installed into my PIII 550 and have had problem after problem.
First, the drivers (which are contained on 4 X floppy disks) failed to install.
I had to reinstall card three times to work satisfactorily.
Second, as most are probably aware - LOGIC 4.0 would not open and displayed an ambiguous error message related to the DMAN PCI card.
Driver update - updated the drivers so card would work with LOGIC.
Right - ready to rock and roll....NOT.
The line-ins now record no audio.
After the failure of MIDIMAN support areas to assist I have given my card and PC to an expensive PC repair centre for them to test problem. I have a feeling the card may be faulty - my concern is the innadequate lack of support and service by the MIDIMAN tech teams.
Beware - Im a novice to music but fairly proficient in PCs and its caused me nothing but headaches.
DMAN PCI? THUMBS DOWN.
