M-audio DELTA 1010

10x10 PCI Based Digital Audio System

Just keeping things up-to-date at Dancetech by adding this new product from MIDIMAN/D-MAN in Germany... Previously for multiple I/O use MIDIMAN offered their 4 In X 4 OUT card the 2044 whuich used a cluster cable breakout with 8 1/4 jack sockets.... Well now here's MIDIMANS entry to the 8 channel In/OUT marketplace, The DELTA-IOIO, slated for a SEPTEMBER 99 release, and it has to be said... MIDIMAN usually deliver well-spec'd, no-frills quality kit, so this should be a very interesting product...

The new DELTA offers MIDIMANS own rack I/O converter as opposed to going with ADAT compatible output... personally, I think I'd buy into ADAT complient interfaces now as they offer so many possible add-on devices/routing... You can go with any of the currect ADAT complient interfaces, or route digital outputs to ADAT complient mixers for direct digital mixing... whatever... The upside to non-ADAT kit is that manufacturers who offer 'All-in-one' solutions can control the whole design process for complete compatibility... Anyways, that is the route MIDIMAN have choosen.. and the DELTA-IOIO comes with an external rack-unit converter offering 8 X (24bit/96k compatible) balanced or unbalanced analog In/OUT & word-clock on the main rack-unit, as well as S/PDIF connectors on the card... the whole lot links up with a multi-pin connector cable like the Event cards and is Full-Duplex, meaning you can playback say 8 analog outputs, whilst recording IN to a track from your S/PDIF source or say record analog streo in off 2 inputs whilst also sending out a master from the S/PDIF OUT to DAT - whatever... Full-Duplex......

Having Full duplex with say a Cubase VST or Logic system means you can allocate say one output pair to your main analog monitor out, S/PDIF to say the DAT, and you could also allocate I/O channles to feed external FX processors etc...

You also get MIDI IN/OUT on the main rack unit with handy MIDI activity lights for IN/OUT signal testing... Nice touch, cos it means there is no possible sync probelms which you might get using a multi-I/O system with sepearte MIDI port....

Finally to round things off, the main unit has an extrnal isolated power supply, (read: wall-wart) which MIDIMAN claim helps to isolate power noise problems from the main unit... Well, here's the spec's as quoted by MIDIMAN... Looks like a nice unit, fully complient with the currect bandwidths offered by the latest sequencer/audio programmes & editors...

well, this gear is really fine. I donīt have it for a long time now, but the AD/DA converters are doing their job very good and without any strange things. The Cubase VST ASIO2 drivers are well designed and you can reach about 3-10 ms latency. Thats fine when you are playing some synth-plugins live!

If you need 8 Inīs and 8 Outīs with the upgrade option for ADAT, this is your gear.

Have Fun

Clemens

This thing is great!
I'd been using an SB-Live for so long,
I forgot how good my equipment can
sound! The 1010 will keep your sound
fully intact - it's completely
transparent. It's very quiet - If I
want to hear noise from this thing, I've
got to turn everything up to the point
where my monitors would blow with a
single kick drum. Installation is
easy, and the manual is very good. The
only problem I've seen is the current
ASIO driver. It doesn't seem to
support the 24-bit/96kHz sampling rate
without causing sync problems. I
believe M-Audio is fixing this now.
You can use the other drivers, though,
and the ASIO's will work for the other
rates/depths. The MIDI is useful
either as a sync-source, or just as an
extra port for your setup.
It's extremely flexible, with its
routings and monitor mixer. I had to
read the manual to fully understand it,
but it was worth it. I can put together
all of my sound sources easily with the
mixer, and record back the result,
without having to go through any kind
of mixing desk, and without added
noise.

While I can't compare this card to any
of those real fancy ones, with onboard
FX and synths and junk, I CAN say that
this card serves its purpose VERY WELL!
