This is Behringer's circuit accurate 100% analog clone of the MK2 Roland VP-330 vocoder keyboard unit & this baby carries a surprising weight & heft of the original late 70's unit with it's substantial metal casing & wooden end cheeks, but with a perhaps sensibly reduced in length 3-Octave, 37 note keyboard which is plenty for what the vast majority of users will use this unit for - reproducing those classic 70's era synth/choir & vocoder sounds & phrases.
The keyboard btw also transmits MIDI data which is a useful bonus because not only does it afford velocity playing of the synth/strings/choir sounds of the unit, but a vocoder REALLY needs a built in keyboard and if you are going to take up space in a typical bedroom studio with a keyboard, then those keys need to ideally be usable as a master keyboard to trigger other things. This also makes the unit much more manageable for carting around to live gigs where it perhaps might only be used on one or at the most 2 songs in the set.... Behringer think this stuff through clearly!
The Vocoder VC340 gives you a string synth, choir sound synth and vocoder all in one unit & the general consensus seems to be that like with all these incredible Behringer clone units you'd be very hard pressed to tell this unit from the original Roland Vocoder, but obviously you get that classic sound at a fraction of what an original VP330 goes for nowadays (3 grand GBP or more!)
