Korg DW8000

The Korg DW8000 is the bigger brother to the DW6000.... both are DCO synths released a year or so before the M1..... Both have analog synthesis sections... with very nice filters... (I wondered if they were the same as on the DSS-1??).... this DW8000 model doubles the waveforms of the DW6000 to give you 16, doubled at 2 per voice to give 8 note poly of 2 osc' voices........ but.....

Like the 106, you can do a Unison mode to stack the 16 oscillators !...

The 8000 like the 6000 also has excellent Korg analog filters... they go to self-resonance for squeel-appeal !... All in all a nice not-too-well-known unit......The 8000 even has an onboard arpeggiator which can clock to midi, and is velocity & aftertouch sensitive.... Other features include Midi In, Out and Thru; cassette interface; stereo outs; foot switch control for patch changing, portamento and sustain; 64 memories; aftertouch keyboard; arpeggiator and ... yup !!....a built-in digital delay unit.... Cooo !!.....

So there ya go... Cheap Korg analog (almost)....... They also did a rackmount version, the EX8000 which was the same in a box, but with no arpeggiator..... Comments please !.....

had one for a couple weeks! didn't really like it though. i'm more into techno-industrial, and i couldn't get a very wide range of sounds out of it, but then again, i got kinda frustrated fast. it's built kinda crappily! and for those of you who say that one day your arpeggiator works, the next day it doesn't check to make sure the arpeggiator isn't synced to midi!! i made that mistake and couldn't figure out that damn thing for days! sheesh.. bottom line = didn't like it cuz it's not for my music. BUT the one patch i could make that everything else seemed to sound like KICKED ASS! but it's not worth a big-ass keyboard and $330

simple but very nice sounding. it is in fact the same filter from the DSS1 (except the DSS-1 has an extra 12db mode). i thought it had a decent range
of sounds. the noise through the filter
makes some great spacey washes.

if you can deal with the slow DD, the
DSS1 is like a super-DW with lots
of advantages and few disadvantages
over the dw8000 (biggest: no arp!). but for a basic module for the $200 or so they go for now it can't be beat...

oh yeah...there's an upgrade for this
that expands the memory 8x, makes
it bitimbral, splits the arp into 2
and makes it sync to midi, and
gives it a way cool S&H lfo waveform..
hard to find but worth it...

I just got an EX-8000 yesterday. I am quite pleased with it. It is a very squelchy sounding synth. It's go very deep low end and very squelchy high end. Does nice bass and brass sounds. The interface is simple and very easy to use. All of the parameters are laid out on the front panel. If you can find this synth for a good price (I paid $150 for mine), get it. You'll be happy.

It makes a great controller. I had someone spill the better part of a bottle of beer on the keys. I just poured the beer out, let it dry - it still works just fine!

A great value for the money. Capable of some great ambient, deep, murky tones. Very solid sounds and has the beautiful self-oscillation thing at times. Couple this w/ the onboard delay and arp, and you've got damn nice analog hybrid. It's not fashionable at all, so you should be able to buy one cheaply ($200). The programming is pretty simple since the parameters are logically displayed on the front panel, although the buttons sometimes trigger either too quickly or stick. Solidly built and reliable. My only complaint is the crappy keyboard action. Oh, I forgot to mention, it also has aftertouch.

Dw-8000 is not a DCO synth. IT got sampled wavforms. I love the sound

I bought a DW8000 after reading a retrozone-article in the german "Keys"...
I think it provides a quite wide range of sounds, that are on the whole real cool!
Check out the real bad ones as well as soft, bell-like sounds!

P.S.: If someone knows how to program some real bad and pumping bass sounds please tell me or send a preset for the DW8000-Editor!

any one got a spare power cable for this? i got one 2nd hand but it didnt come with a power lead and ive never seen a power connection like the one it has on the back, it looks like a kettle lead but with only 2 pins in a square housing instead of a kettle lead shaped housing. does anyone know what this type of connection this is or what its called?

My first "real" synth, paid 152 euros and very happy with it.
It's cheap not because it sucks but because lots of "analogue freaks" are more willing
to spend 400 euros for a juno 106 (which is a dco based) rather for this one which is a digital/analog hybrid. So, digital waveforms with a VCO filter which imho is really great.
Review on http://www.bluesynths.com/ explains clearly the carachteristics of this synth.

the only thing i can see is wrong with the unit is that there is no power supply input, it has been ripped out to leave 2 bare wires, black and yellow! i am just really hoping to source a replacement!!!

if anyone can help, i will be more than gratefull and will definitely post audio clips as soon as i get the beast working!!!!

cheers!!

Korg DW 8000 is awesome. I got a Dw 6000 several years ago and programmed some really cool Hammondesque sounds that took it over the top in getting the ultimate Hammond sound. The 8000's potential is success in the making. It took my Hammond sounds to the cutting edge. Personally. I think it beats the heck out of the Hammond because as cool as the Hammond sounds it is extremely limidted in spectrum. Korg DW8000 will live forever!

Hey folks,

Anyone know where I can buy a power supply for this model? The Korg website appears to be of little help and I do not know where else to look ...

Thanks for any help.

I picked one of these up from a local craigslist ad not really knowing what to expect but knowing that I couldn't go wrong for $150 US. I've owned 2 Poly-800's most of my life and sadly let them both go in college. I have a closet full of Rolands and Yamahas and a couple of Ensoniqs and none has anything like the old Poly-800 sound so I gambled on the DW8000. Within a couple hours of ownership, it became my favorite synth for sound tweaking. It's limited in capability compared to my AN1x or hybrid Rolands, but the sound is impressively FAT for a hybrid, and even whips some of the Juno sounds in 'fat' if you want a fat synthy bassline. Using either 'Unison' mode (mono modes that layer all voices on one note) You can quickly make some riping sounds. Down side is lack of triangle, square and some other common waveforms, but it goes from saw to sine, and the other 14 are saws and sines sort of randomly tweaked to various forms of symmetric distortion. Using a 'distorted guitar' wave (waveform 10) on OSC1 and a saw (waveform 1) on OSC2 in unison mode makes a sound eerily similar to the FutureRetro 777 I sadly don't own any more. Don't look for this thing to make a movie soundtrack or gratuitous sound effects, nor to make great Moogish type sounds, but if you're in to dark pads and ripping saw brass, I personally rank this just below the classic analog Rolands; I am still amazed every time I hear the deep punchy brass sounds I make with it. I give this a 5/5 not because it's the best synth in the world, but because it's realllly easy to program once you get the hang of it (took me about an hour with no manual) and for the current price range, you can't touch this sound with a 20 foot pole. IT is what it is, and it's not the bread and butter 'one synth to own' but it is VERY good at what it does, and the simple arpeggiator is the only one I own that can reproduce some of the old jupiter type arpeggios without hooking it up to a PC or using any sort of external editor. If you have the chance, I highly recommend it, but only if you own a few other synths for day to day business and want some fat analog type brass and classic poly sounds without the classic analogue price tag.

i have to agree with several of the posters above. what a nice fat sound this thing gets and the hammondesque sounds are superb. of course, you have to process the thing through a killer daw like pro tools or sonar, but once you get the hang of it, boy, you can do some awesome td, chris/cosey, vangelis, 80's pbs science show music type stuff.

this is not a synth for stupid 'industrial grommets' ^^ who don't know how to program a synth from scratch. i got mine for 50 bucks almost mint, but without the stereo outputs working. no problem, midi handles it just fine.

for the guy looking for a cord, go to sweetwater music (google it) and get the hosa pwc-178 two prong cord. measley 8 bucks with free shipping. and for the other guy looking for a power receptacle with the wires protuding, just fit the two wires with a three prong plug, just solder the wires to the two outer plugs of the three prong leaving alone the the middle 'ground'. thats it, i hear it works.
cheers

Hey Luke,

I bought a DW 8000 about 10 years ago from a music show. When I got it home the power lead was missing. After much research I found it was impossible to replace, but I was lucky as I managed to contact the shop it came from who kindly sent it to a nearby music shop for me. My advice would be to get the power socket changed to a 'kettle lead' type.

Yep...a nice sounding digital/analogue hybrid synth, really easy to program and vey easy to coax some rich phat sounds from.
Nice sounding analogue filter which self resonates for some wild squeal, unison mode allows you to stack all 8 voices to produce some very fat sounds....midi, arp, plus lots more features including a delay....
