Roland JUNO 106The Juno 106 was released by Roland in the same year as the 909 (1984) and as with the 909 it was the key year in which they released analog/digital hybrid equiptment with midi control..... This makes the 106, one of the few genuine older analog bits of kit (although it's got dco's) with midi control..... The 106 is a massively popular synth for dance music of all style due to this fact...
Basicaly, It's a 6 note poly dco synth with an all analog synthesis section..... You get 1 osc' per voice, with sub-osc'......These can be stacked in 'Unison' Mode..... that then puts the unit into monophonic mode....and gives massive fat bass and lead lines..... outside of that, it does all the usual stuff for this type of synth, but sounding thinner than a real VCO synth.....It's this stacked mono-mode that gets the much sought after fat lead and bass sound.....As used by artsits such as Vangelis, William Orbit, Biosphere, 808 State, Moby, Todd Terry etc etc....
It's a well built unit, last of the Roland Juno line to feature colourful front panel layout and knobs as opposed to mambrane switches etc , with a 61 note keyboard.......dedicatd sliders and switches for editing/live twiddling.....and lots of hardware controller sources....
As you can see.... Lots of control/editing sources..... the results of which can be saved to 128 different patch positions, and of course....twiddled live or to recording or saved to disk, cos ALL the sliders and knobs output sysex !!......
- LFO Modulation, Pulse Width Modulation, PWM Mode Switch (LFO/Manual), Pulse Wave (On/Off) & Indicator Waveforms, Sawtooth (On/Off) & Indicator Waveforms, Range Selector Buttons (16', 8', 4'), Sub Oscillator Level, Noise Level.
- rate and delay
- Cutoff Frequency, Resonance (0- Self Oscillation), ENV Modulation, Polarity Switch (inverter), LFO Modulation, Key Follow(0-100%)
- gate and a/d/s/r
- level and gate/env
- stereo off/1/2
On top of that lot, you've also got plenty of controllers......
- Portamento Time
- Portamento Switch (ON/OFF)
- LFO Trigger Sens
- Bend Sens (DCO)
- Bend Sens (VCF)
- Bender Lever
Once the sounds are edited using these controls, you can select from A or B banks...then save in 8 banks of 8 patches....128 total!....
So...... all in all, you can see why this synth became so popular, with a resulting hike in price on the market.... You used to get these for about 250 squids.... but prices have now risen to about £ 400 average.....with a few knocking around the 300-350 mark. maybe these ones have some problems, as I read somewhere that certain batches had problem chips inside..... still, a great dance-classic synth for a variety of studio jobs and styles from Gabber to Ambient, and a beginners dream to learn about synthesis.... check it out !!..... Incidently.... you could get the Roland H60.... if you can find one, it's the same internal board and parts as the 106..... basically a 106 in a different box for home keyboard players type thang !!..... Anyhow.... comments please.!!....
Note that the sound here is in mono and that I used no external effect except when notified. I used ...
