Korg A3

Not much info, just adding a few olf fx to the listings... This is the Korg A3, at the time quite a 'biggie' release for Korg, it was a 'hot new multi-fx', 16 bit, 40 effects combined into 100 preset combi's or user create presets. Same FX as in the Korg M1 keyboard, auto-whah, distoirtion, reverb, exciter, comp' etc... you could string the fx in series and it also had a footswitch jobbie (FC6) for selecting some sounds at live sets... well not much to say is there?...

Any user comments?... please leave them...

The Korg A3 is an extremely versatile effects processor, with exceptional tone.........even to this day. It's not an amp/ cab modeler........but with a little tweaking and a few add-ons.....it actually sounds puchier and fuller than products such as the POD/ Genesis.

While the clean patches are supreme right out of the can, the A3 dirt/ gain stage does require an external speaker simulator (such as the H&K Redbox) which is very subtle.......as well as a tube stage, such as a Presonus Bluetube mic pre and external EQ (due to the narrow bandwidth of the A3 frequency).

With these simple modifications.......the A3 comes of age. Even without this retrofit, the A3 is still finding its way onto a surprizing number of albums today. Just ask around........

This is an older unit and for some reason Korg barely wants to admit it ever existed. I started www.korgaseries.org to help people get documentation, new effects and patches, and connect with other users when help is needed. I've heard through the grapevine that Korg actually directs A1/A2/A3 support questions to MY website. :) If you need help, now you know where to find us!

Hi, I changed the battery in my A3 and didn't save the sound patches or chains. How can I find a card with the factory chains to bring my A3 back to life......Michael

I use two A3's and I've found it to be an amazing effects rack. There's quite a bit to get through, what with having so many chains and different cards and most of the effects are great. The reverbs and delay's are very 'tweakable' and you can get some lovely tube crunch out of the overdrives. The Edge gets quite a bit of heavy sounds from this machine too. The only downside are the plastic input/output jacks that become a problem after touring and the 500ms delay between patch changing can be a lsight problem live. (using patches with the same chain helps a bit) Apart from that, they're pretty robust and even I can manage to change the dreaded backlight after a coffee and cig or two.

I bought the Korg A3 used and have had it over 15 years. It's survived alot of band use and shows. I just play at home now, but the Korg stays.

2 repairs - 1 input jack resolder. 2 the plastic battery clip gets brittle over time so broke and I had to get a new clip put in by a tech. Always back up your presets if you have no card, write them out. Get a spare batt and be VERY careful when you have to change it.

My backlight and tube are still holding out.

I used some pedals as well but a distortion pedal was never needed.
It handles a variety of classic rock and metal tones quite well.
I'm more into metal/rock/blues/jazz fusion stuff these days. I can get some ok Satch and Vai tones at least the ones everyone else can get short of adding a digitech whammy or eventide harmonizer, with a $400. guitar and stock (atm) pickups. My boss ds-1 sits in a box.

I do have a problem with muddy cleans and excess noise but know
a) my pickups are crap. b) my input level was too high so clippig
c) the bass and mid settings on the amp/mp3 and parametric eq were too high. d) a tube amp will blow away solid state e) a hush or bbe unit could work wonders. I want to hear lush cleans with sparkle and shimmer, hear hot amp tubes breaking up during well saturated distortion and pull out alot of harmonics. I know this unit can do it again once I fix my setup.

If you're used to it, the delay time for switching sounds isn't a problem.

I'm likely to keep my korg, replace my solid state practice amp to go tube again, while fine tuning the rest of my setup, probably sell my ada mp-1 or trade it for a hush unit or bbe maximizer to use with the korg.

I've tried some line 6 amps but even before fine-tuning my old setup I definately like my distortions better it's just a warmer more expressive tone, even thru my crappy old solid state fender with shot pots. it was HEAVY thru my Peavey butcher head and cab. Aaron's A3 site offers alot of support I will definately hit there.

A3 may be old tech but it's still good tech, and will give you many happy hours of guitaring thru a wide range of music. Run it into a 30w true tube amp, eq unit and a hush. You'll have many peeps looking into your rack to see what you're using. Add a wah and you're good :D
