Released in 1987, the Roland D-50 Linear Synthesizer is easily one of the most influential keyboards ever made. This revolutionary instrument helped define the sound of the late ‘80s with its instantly recognizable mix of sampled attacks and synthesized sustaining waveforms, plus built-in chorus, reverb, and EQ. It’s the basis of classic tracks in a wide range of genres including synth pop, new wave, new jack, and R&B, and can be heard in countless film scores of the era. With the Roland D-05, you get the iconic sound and dedicated control of the D-50 in a modern device that perfectly recreates the legendary synth down to its finest details.
So says the Roland website promo. What you get is one of the most faithul Roland reproductions of an old classic in the Boutique range but with increased 16 note polyphony & an added arpeggiator & step sequencer.
Unlike the other Boutique series modules, with the D-05 Roland chose NOT to include hands-on, mini-sized, hardware controllers which were previously only available via an add-on PG Programmer unit with the originals. With the D-05 you get the classic D-50 buttons & menus to edit sounds plus the familiar joystick controller as well as Boutique Series vertical/linear ribbon touch controllers for the Pitch & Mod wheel. This means a 3rd party editor is required for hands on control and amazingly the original PG-1000 for the D-50 works with the D-05.
